Inferno Character Placement
  • Claim: The Fairy Godmother from the Dreamworks movie Shrek 2 belongs in the Ninth Bolgia of Circle Eight of the Inferno as a sower of discord.

  • Data: The Fairy Godmother constantly pins the lovers Shrek and Fiona against each other to gain personal wealth. She hopes to turn them against each other so that her son, Prince Charming, becomes the king of Far Far Away. The Fairy Godmother also threatens King Harold to do what she says, leading him down an evil path as well.

  • Warrant: The chaos, which ensues at the end of the movie, is revealed to have been the works of the Fairy Godmother, and it reveals to the characters the Fairy Godmother persuaded people to perform evil acts. She is also seen to have threatened King Harold to assist her in tricking Shrek and Fiona.

  • Backing: A sower of discord leads innocent people down a dark road that causes death and destruction in most cases.

  • Counterclaim: Some other people may say the Fairy Godmother belongs in the third circle with the gluttons as she is constantly asking for more food when she is stressed. For example, after Shrek wrecks her potion factory, the Fairy Godmother orders for somebody to “please bring [her] something deep fat fried and smothered in chocolate” (Shrek 2). Also, when King Harold is unwilling to assist her in her nefarious deeds, the Fairy Godmother orders even more food to calm herself.

  • Rebuttal: However, the Fairy Godmother most likely belongs in the ninth Bolgia of Circle Eight because her creation of disorder affects her peers more than her gluttony as her gluttony only affects herself. Moreover, the Fairy Godmother’s gluttony never physically harms anyone in the movie. The Fairy Godmother leading people to do evil acts is more affective to the protagonists in the movie.
